Remembering Frances

Frances McEwen, one of our beloved founding members, will always be remembered.  She possessed a unique ability to make those around her feel important.  She loved “art for the sake of art”.  Her cat and dog angels were always a favorite among show attendees.  She rarely missed shows or meetings and always had something delicious to share.  For any child that passed by her booth, she had a smile, kind words, and most often an origami creation to give them.

Memorials to Frances are requested to be given to the Oxford Lafayette Humane Society.  Thank you to those members who have already honored her in this way.

Her angels!

One of her "real" angels!

What did she just say?

"Always listening"

Article in the Daily Mississippian

Whoo Hoo!!  What a great article written by Kaitlyn DeBose and featured in the Daily Mississippian

From paintings and pottery to music and food, the Oxford Artist Guild held 2nd annual Biggest Baddest Art Show on Monday, November 14.
The event, held at the Powerhouse, displayed works from local artists and provided an opportunity to showcase artistic talent in Oxford.
More than 150 people visited the art show which had over a hundred pieces of art in various mediums. 88 artists showcased work, including woodwork, porcelain and paintings.
President of the Oxford Artist Guild, Lori Blaylock, said she was pleased with the number of people who came out to the show and was happy the artists of Oxford have this opportunity to have their work displayed.
“It’s an awesome show this year, “Blaylock said. “It’s just growing so big. Oxford is full of talent and this is a great way for artists to get exposure.”
Brinkley Gaia was a first time visitor to the Art show and said she was impressed with the many forms of art.
“I love the pieces,” Gaia said. “Some of them are extraordinary.”
One particularly different type of art on display was the work of Vikki Hughes. Rather than oil paintings or ceramics, Hughes created jewelry.
“This is my first year time in the art show and I think it’s going well,” Hughes said. “I’ve been doing this [making jewelry] since 1990, but it’s progressed.”
During the show, viewers were given ballots and could vote for their favorite piece of art in a “People’s Choice Award.” This is something new to the show, said Susan Hayman who came to the Biggest Baddest Art Show last year.
“I’ve never voted before,” Hayman said. “I think it’s wonderful.”
The awards were divided into three categories, favorite new member work, favorite fine artwork and favorite fine craftsmen.
People’s choice fine art winner was Joan Vaughn with “Here’s to You.” Favorite new member winner was “Tea Roses and Red Vase” by Tammy Oliver Cook. Cecil Bowers won the craftsman people’s choice award.
Wine and refreshment were provided for guests. Music was performed by local musicians Tate Moore and David Woolworth for the Biggest Baddest Art Show.
The Oxford Artists Guild will hold another exhibition at the Christmas Market which opens this Friday December 2 and 3.
