This week’s highlighted artists are two of the main characters of the ballet, a local actor and a guest dancer:
Drosselmeyer and the Sugar Plum Fairy
Drosselmeyer played by local actor, Johnny McPhail portrays the mysterious and quirky great uncle to Clara and Fritz who is always full of magic and surprises.
Johnny McPhail currently resides in Oxford but is a native of Bruce, Miss. He began acting at age 50 and has been in such films as “Ballast,” “Chasing the White Dragon”, “Carried Away”, “Night of the Loup Garou,” “Big Bad Love”, “Where I Begin”, “25K”, “Old Oak”, and “Dodge Dakota in: River City Dead”. As a storyteller and theatrical actor, McPhail delights audiences every year at the Tennessee Williams Festival in Clarksdale, MS--as well as numerous other productions throughout the South. Besides acting, he devotes much of his time advocating for people with disabilities.
Erika Romanyuk returns to Oxford again this year to delight the audience as the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy as well as perform the role of the dazzling Snow Queen.
Erika Farrar–Romanyuk received her training in Yuma, Arizona under the direction of Jon Christifori, Kathleen Sinclair, Linda Farrar at The Dancer's Workshop, and Yuma Ballet Theatre. At the age of 18, she became the youngest member of Ballet Magnificat, joining the company in its tours across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. She also performed as a member of both Nashville Ballet and Atlanta Ballet. During her professional career, Erika performed such works as Serenade, The Four Temperments, Coppelia, Giselle, Paquita, Square Dance, and was featured in soloist and principal roles in The Nutcracker, Valse Fantasie, Swan Lake, Hallberg Suite and various works by Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Paul Vasterling. Erika toured as principle dancer throughout the United States with Hosanna Sacred Arts, under the direction of artistic director, Kenn Tolle who created new works on her. Erika also performed as a soloist for Ephiphany Dancers, a modern dance company in Nashville, Tennessee.
