Calendar of Events October 25 – 31, 2010

We hope everyone will have a safe & happy Halloween this coming Sunday!

H2: Healthy Halloween on the Square
Sunday. October 31, 2010
Powerhouse Community Arts Center
 2:00PM-5:00PM

This fun family event mixes the celebration of Halloween with arts, crafts and the chance to learn that treats can be healthy.

Rebel Body Fitness, Holli's Sweet Tooth, Vegfund and the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council host this family friendly activity that encourages family not just to walk on Halloween but enjoy walking and making healthy choices together every night.

This FREE event features art, crafts and activities to engage the mind and body from bobbing for apples grown locally on a co-op farm, encouraging kids to play everyday to stay healthy, and use their creativity with crafts from Brilliant Easel Art School and the University Museum.

Children will have a chance to see if they have the loudest, scariest scream at our scream contest hosted by Children's Dental Center, a magic show by Steve Thomas, and stories from Square Books Jr., and the Oxford Literacy Council. These are just a few of the special activities and booths at H2: Healthy Halloween on the Square.

NEW in the Powerhouse Gallery:

The North Mississippi Storytellers Guild

This year there will be two great chances to enjoy one of Oxford’s most popular events, Pumpkin Patch Telling in the pumpkin patch at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in downtown Oxford.
Closing the Halloween season, on Friday evening the 29th at 6:00 p.m., the North Mississippi Storytellers Guild will share ghostly tales and songs under the Bodock tree at the L. Q. C. Lamar Museum.  Again the Telling Teens will join the tellers to showcase their tales learned in workshops offered through a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission by master storyteller Dr. Rebecca Jernigan.  The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets and join the tellers and musicians for this first ever telling under the spectral shadow of the ancient Bodock tree.

For any questions concerning this event please contact Rebecca Jernigan at 234-0550.
